Background of the study
Urban slum growth has emerged as a significant challenge in many developing regions, leading to increased environmental pollution and public health concerns. In Abeokuta South, rapid and unplanned urbanization has resulted in the proliferation of slums where inadequate infrastructure exacerbates environmental degradation (Adewale, 2023). Poor waste management, overcrowding, and limited access to sanitation facilities contribute to air, water, and soil pollution, further deteriorating living conditions (Ogunleye, 2024). The interrelationship between urban slum growth and environmental pollution highlights the need for integrated urban planning and sustainable development initiatives. Recent studies emphasize the role of policy interventions and community-based strategies in addressing these challenges (Adewale, 2023). This research investigates the link between urban slum expansion and environmental pollution in Abeokuta South, aiming to identify the key drivers and propose effective mitigation strategies (Ogunleye, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Abeokuta South Local Government Area is experiencing significant environmental pollution, primarily due to the unchecked growth of urban slums. Inadequate infrastructure, poor waste disposal, and high population density in slum areas contribute to increased pollution levels, adversely affecting residents’ health and quality of life. The rapid expansion of slums without corresponding improvements in urban planning and public services has exacerbated these issues. This study seeks to assess the impact of urban slum growth on environmental pollution and propose strategies to mitigate its adverse effects (Adewale, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine the extent of urban slum growth in Abeokuta South.

  2. To assess the relationship between slum growth and environmental pollution.

  3. To propose sustainable urban planning strategies to mitigate pollution.

Research questions:

  1. What is the extent of urban slum growth in Abeokuta South?

  2. How does slum expansion contribute to environmental pollution?

  3. What strategies can reduce pollution in slum areas?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Urban slum growth is significantly associated with increased environmental pollution.

  2. Poor infrastructure in slum areas contributes to higher pollution levels.

  3. Sustainable urban planning can mitigate the environmental impact of slum growth.

Significance of the study
The study will provide critical insights into the nexus between urban slum growth and environmental pollution. Its findings will inform urban planners, policymakers, and community stakeholders on effective strategies to improve living conditions and promote sustainable urban development in Abeokuta South (Ogunleye, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating the link between urban slum growth and environmental pollution within Abeokuta South Local Government Area.

Definitions of terms:

  • Urban Slum: A densely populated urban area characterized by substandard housing and inadequate living conditions.

  • Environmental Pollution: The introduction of harmful substances into the environment.

Sustainable Urban Planning: Strategies aimed at promoting environmentally responsible and livable urban development
